Mini Split Installation Cost Calculator
This mini split cost calculator asks a few questions and gives a typical San Diego-area range, where your project is likely to sit in it, separate add-ons and the permit fee for your area. No contact details needed; the result updates as you go.
Estimate your project
The job and the number of rooms choose the range. The other answers tell you where in that range your project is likely to sit; they never change the range itself.
Typical San Diego-area range, installed
$3,000 to $7,500
One indoor head, one outdoor unit, the line set, drain, a new 240V circuit and the permit.
Where your project may fall
- Toward the low endWall heads are the simplest to mount and service.
- Toward the low endA short run straight through the wall keeps the line set and line-hide small.
- In betweenA gravity drain on an outside wall is the simplest condensate path.
Taken together, your answers point toward the low end of the range.
Sizing
Near the coast, loads are lighter and humidity matters more. Oversizing a small coastal room is the common mistake, and coastal units benefit from placement out of direct salt spray.
Permit
City of San Diego mechanical permit: $176.57 for the first indoor unit. Electrical lines for a new circuit are listed separately; the exact total is set when the permit is issued.
Incentives
The federal 25C credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, and the state's main heat pump rebate waitlist has closed. Income-qualified programs remain; check eligibility with the program administrator. Nothing is subtracted here.
These are budgeting ranges for San Diego-area projects, not a quote or a company rate. The price for your home comes after a site visit and a load calculation.
How the estimate works
One room shows $3,000 to $7,500, two or three rooms $7,000 to $16,000, and four or more from $13,000 with the top left open, because large premium systems run well past the common range. These are typical installed ranges for San Diego-area projects, not quotes or company rates.
Head style, the route to the outdoor unit, the drain path and the panel each add a note saying whether they push a job toward the high or the low end. There is no honest way to turn them into percentages, so the tool does not try, and it never sizes from square footage. A panel that needs a service upgrade shows as its own line, $2,800 to $5,500.
Permit fees are the agencies' published figures: the City of San Diego lists $176.57 for a mini split air handler and $52.39 for each added unit; the County lists $392 for a mechanical permit and $498 with electrical work. Other cities set their own.
What the range leaves out
- A service upgrade or subpanel, shown separately when your panel answer suggests one
- Stucco, drywall or paint repairs beyond sealing the wall penetration
- Unusual structural work for a ceiling cassette or roof-mounted outdoor unit
- Rebates and incentives, which are not subtracted
- Replacement, commercial and server-room systems, which are priced after a visit
